Bajaj Is Back With Electric Scooter, Chetak, Launch Scheduled In January

Bajaj Auto Ltd, India’s second-largest motorcycle manufacturer announced to launch the electric scooter, Chetak almost after a decade’s gap. However, the Pune-based company has not revealed the price of the scooter and is expected to announce it before beginning dispatches.

Bajaj stopped manufacturing traditional scooters around 2009 to concentrate on motorcycles. The new Chetak will be available in two variants and offer a range of 85 kilometre and 95 kilometre.

Motor And Battery

The Chetak will feature a 4kW electric motor. Even though the exact features are yet not disclosed, the e-scooter is expected to use an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack. Visuals shown from the manufacturing plant denote that the battery pack may not be removable, but this needs to be confirmed. The e-scooter also has two riding modes, Eco and Sport and it will have a reverse assist feature.

The electric scooter is well- equipped LED lighting with a neat LED DRL that defines the shape of the headlight. Chetak will come in six colour variants such as classic ivory and gold giving a retro feel. Metal body panels are used in place of fibre or plastic. The Chetak’s seat has a unique cantilever design evoking a retro touch. Another retro touch is the inclusion of a glove box, but with a modern soft-close effect.

Rajiv Bajaj, managing director Bajaj Auto remarked, “When we do something it’s better to come first and there is virtually no point coming second or third. It’s very important to be first to market. Scooters and step-through are a very important segment and we have not made the electric Chetak be in the volume space. We are trying to build meaningful niches with three-wheelers, superbikes, and electric scooters,” said Bajaj.”
