You don’t need a report to tell you how pollution has spiked in the last decade. And one of the main contributors to this toxic air pollution is emissions from cars that increase levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Automobile manufacturers have increasingly begun to take note of the situation, and have gradually started to make the shift from petrol and diesel vehicles, to cleaner and greener electric and hybrid versions. These vehicles not only consume lower fuel, but also keep emissions to a minimum.
What are electric vehicles? An electric vehicle, also called an EV, uses one or more electric motors for propulsion. An electric vehicle may be powered through a collector system by electricity from off-vehicle sources or may be self-contained with a battery an electric generator to convert fuel to electricity. Limited cars come under these categories as they are costlier than the normal ones. There are three types of electric Battery Electric Vehicle(BEVS), Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles(PHEVs) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEVS)
Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEVs)
The HEV is a type of hybrid vehicle that combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) system with an electric propulsion system (hybrid vehicle drivetrain). The presence of the electric powertrain is intended to beget either better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle or better performance. There are very rare cars in this category such as the Toyota Prius Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Battery Electric Vehicles(BEVs)
Battery electric vehicles are also known as an electronic vehicle, are fully-electric vehicles with rechargeable batteries and no gas engine. Battery electric vehicles store and create electricity onboard with high-capacity battery packs. Their battery power is used to run the electric motor in the car and all onboard electronics. BEVs do not emit any harmful emissions and hazards caused by traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. BEVs are charged by electricity from an external source. Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers are classified according to the speed with which they recharge an EVs battery. There are few cars in this category – BMW i3, Chevy Bolt, Chevy Spark, Nissan LEAF, Ford Focus Electric, Hyundai Ioniq, Karma Revera, Kia SoulMitsubishi i-MiEV, Tesla Model S, Tesla X, Toyota Rav4 and Volkswagen e-Golf.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEVs)
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles can recharge the battery through both regenerative braking and “plugging in” it to an external source of electrical power. While “standard” hybrids can (at low speed) go about 1-2 miles only before the gas engine turns on, PHEV models can go anywhere from 10-40 miles before their gas engines provide assistance.
